the multiplicity of things
I'm reading Fritjof Capra again, returning to my Daoist roots. In college I studied cognitive science in conjunction with mystic philosophy. Our tendency to divide the perceived world into individual and separate things and to experience ourselves as isolated egos in this world is seen as an illusion which comes from our measuring and categorizing mentality. It is called avidya ... and is seen as the state of a disturbed mind which has to be overcome. - Capra Categorizing mentality! And here I just spent two years making a product that explicitly tags everything in life. I can just see Mr. Mystic shaking his head slowly, shedding a single tear like the American Indian in that roadside litter commercial. My answer to Mr. Mystic is that we're only half done with this particular quest. Tagging is only the "build them as islands" side of the equation. Still to come is the "stitch them together" part, which has everything to do with interconnectedness. Now it's time again to ponder the structure of our interconnection, imagine the impossible, wrestle with its design, and invent its user interface. This is why I'm reading Capra.
